Exclusive Interview: Ella May On The Art Of Creating Bridal Gowns That Celebrate Individuality

The visionary behind her namesake label introduces a debut collection that redefines modern bridal elegance

In the world of bridal fashion, where individuality meets artistry, Ella May has carved a niche defined by elegance and emotion. Her eponymous brand reflects a philosophy that goes beyond aesthetics, creating gowns that feel like an extension of the bride herself. With a foundation rooted in formal studies and honed during six transformative years at CHANEL, she brings an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and detail to every design.

What began as a single commission evolved organically into a bespoke label celebrated for its ability to capture character and style in fabric and form. From her debut features in illustrious fashion magazines to opening her first studio, May’s journey is marked by passion and precision. In this exclusive interview with Dream Weddings, she shares the inspirations behind her debut collection, her approach to individuality and the trends shaping modern bridal fashion.

In just three words, how would you describe your brand, Ella May London? Feminine, personal and ethereal.

Could you share the story of how your journey into the world of fashion began? What experiences and influences shaped your background? Fashion has always only ever been what I have wanted to do. I studied Fashion and Textiles and from there, I went on to Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design in London. Upon graduation, I joined CHANEL, where I spent six years learning the most extraordinary world of luxury, craftsmanship and perfection. That experience completely shaped how I approach design today, an appreciation for precision, detail and the artistry behind every piece.

Please tell us about the driving force behind your label. What inspired its creation? For me, it’s about capturing a bride’s individuality; her character, her style and her essence – then translating all of those personal qualities into a dress that is entirely her. Every design is created solely for that one bride, so when she walks down the aisle, it feels like an extension of who she is. The brand itself came about completely organically; one commission led to another, and I realised how much I loved the process of bringing someone’s personality to life through fabric and form. This continues to inspire me every day.

What stands out as the most defining moment in your career so far? Which achievement fills you with the greatest sense of pride? Being featured in top fashion magazines was a real dream come true. I have also recently opened my first studio after three years of working from home which feels like an even greater achievement. I wanted to create a calm, relaxing space where brides can feel instantly at ease and somewhere that reflects the sense of care and individuality that goes into each design.

What is the most common question brides ask you as a trusted bridal expert? Brides often ask, “How does the bespoke process work?” Many expect it to be daunting or formal, but in reality, it is a very relaxed and totally collaborative experience. We work together step by step, creating something truly unique that feels instinctively right for them.

What guidance would you offer brides as they begin trying on gowns or exploring design options for the first time? Have an open mind. Focus less on finding the ‘perfect’ dress straight away and more on discovering the details that make you feel like yourself, whether that’s a certain neckline, fabric or sleeve shape. Those elements become the foundation of something truly personal.

What is the most common misconception brides have when trying on wedding gowns for the first time? I think it’s so important to try on dresses with an open mind and not feel pressured to find THE dress immediately. It’s not often you see yourself in a white gown, so instead of feeling overwhelmed, enjoy the moment, have fun, relax and focus on the elements you love rather than the overall look. Pay attention to details like necklines, fabrics, buttons and sleeves. It’s those elements can become the key detail or foundation to creating something perfect.

When it comes to bridal silhouettes, which trends or style preferences are defining the most sought-after looks? Brides are looking for versatility – dresses that can transform from ceremony to evening, with detachable sleeves or overskirts that make their dress evolve throughout the day. In terms of silhouettes, there’s a clear shift towards less formal shapes; brides want comfort and movement, with fun, playful details rather than rigid, traditional styles.

Could you share the creative vision and inspiration behind The Flower Garden collection? Because everything we create is bespoke and individual for each bride, I wanted to create a collection that showcased a variety of ideas for brides to use as inspiration. The inspiration came from my upbringing in the English countryside, combined with a desire to create feminine, romantic and almost bohemian-style dresses that feel effortless and full of personality.

How many designs feature in the collection, and could you tell us about the distinctive design elements and fabric choices that bring these pieces to life? There are 10 designs in The Flower Garden collection, including three party-length dresses, each named after a flower that inspired it: The Orlaya, The Orchid, The Iris, and so on. I worked with silks, organza and lace, layering tactile fabrics and subtle details to create dresses that feel feminine, romantic and effortless. I am currently designing my new collection, launching this year which I am so excited to share soon.

Which gown from the collection holds a special place in your heart, and what makes it your favourite? It’s too hard to choose! Am I allowed two? I would say both The Orchid and The Orlaya! Both are light, fun and effortless. I believe any bride would have such a fun day and evening wearing them. I have since recreated both dresses with slight design and fabric variations, so each bride can have a version that feels completely unique to her.

We’re excited to see what’s next – what is your vision for the future of your label, and how do you see it evolving in the years ahead? My vision is to continue creating a personal, thoughtful experience where design, craftsmanship and individuality come together seamlessly. I want to keep designing dresses for the individual, pieces that are uniquely them and perfectly reflect their personality, style and essence. I am also excited to soon introduce a new collection of jackets and overlays, offered separately, with a choice of different lace edgings, so brides can personalise their look beyond the wedding dress itself and wear them again and again.
