The most frequent guest at Meliá Desert Palm Dubai has clocked up more than 1,000 visits, I’m informed. Such is the unwavering loyalty to the equestrian institution, which year after year sees a discerning mixture of honeymooners, families, and business travellers glide down its palm-fringed driveway, seeking a tranquil retreat from the bustling rhythm of urban Dubai. Here, it is all about getting close to nature, evidenced by the elusive white peacock that nonchalantly sauntered past me as I embarked upon a leisurely stroll around the grassy grounds of the resort’s estate.

The first thing you will notice about the property is the equestrian-chic décor. Artfully curated in a beautifully refined manner by award-winning designer, Isabelle Miaja, the sleek lobby is bedecked in exquisite artworks, decorative ornaments and statement furniture fashioned from retired leather saddles, providing a glimpse into the polo-inspired aesthetic that lies within.
A stay in one of the 40 stylish abodes – many inclusive of private pools – encompasses all the elements required for a blissful retreat. Dressed in soothing shades inspired by the desert sands and the verdant flora that flourishes nearby, these impeccably curated lodgings exude an air of thoughtful sophistication.

I’m spending a few days in the newly refurbished three-bedroom Al Waha Family Villa, a sanctuary that embodies a true home away from home, equipped with a beautifully appointed kitchen, an elegant dining area and a plush living room. Multiple bathrooms with heavenly rain showers, glazed-ceramic sinks and stone accents offer an abundance of design inspiration (perfect for my fantasy home renovation).
Unquestionably created for those who cherish seclusion, the villa’s expansive outdoor courtyard, encircled by terracotta-hued walls and pink bougainvillea, evokes the charm of the Mediterranean. A morning dip in the private pool is unequivocally recommended, followed by a floating breakfast presented in a heart-shaped basket, gracefully gliding across the surface of the water – a scene worthy of a postcard indeed.

Outside of the villa, nestled within the 160-acre polo estate, a serene spa, state-of-the-art fitness centre and sprawling infinity pool, offers a trio of wellness delights. Opt for an Anne Semonin facial. Other indulgent treatments incorporate scrubs, body wraps, and couples’ massages.
Next, embark on a guided expedition via golf buggy, traversing the vast estate to uncover the exquisite charm of the resort’s stables. Revel in the sight of the resident peacocks and take in the grandeur of the majestic polo ponies and the emotional support horses – an initiative in collaboration with the Equestrian Association for People of Determination.
For those with sporting inclinations, a scenic jogging path, alongside tennis and squash courts, awaits. Those seeking a little more Zen can opt for a private yoga class, or personalised stargazing session.

Epicure, nestled beside the resort’s main pool, is an idyllic meeting place for both locals and hotel guests, providing a tranquil setting to relax while revelling in the magnificent vistas of Dubai’s extraordinary skyline, glistening in the distance. The establishment presents a meticulously crafted menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, showcasing a delightful amalgamation of Levantine and Mediterranean dishes, served either on the terrace, or within the warm embrace of its Spanish-inspired interiors.

Signature Steakhouse stands as the hotel’s fine dining venue, where contemporary interpretations of classic South American cuisine harmoniously intertwine with a curated selection of exquisite wines, sourced from across the globe. At the core of each dish lies an unwavering commitment to detail, ensuring a dining experience that is both memorable and refined.
For those with a penchant for plant-based fare, Signature Steakhouse presents an impressive array of bespoke creations, including the heavenly truffle mushroom risotto, and the delightful roasted eggplant with muhammara purée, figs and pomegranate, catering to vegan palates with finesse.

Meanwhile, Red Bar offers a captivating blend of tradition and modernity – a chic bar adorned with contemporary artworks, embodying an equestrian spirit through its display of trophies and championship polo mallets.
Meliá Desert Palm Dubai stands as an exquisite retreat, located just 30 minutes from the heart of Downtown Dubai. This serene sanctuary epitomises the art of living well; surrounded, of course, by all the hallmarks of exceptional taste synonymous with Dubai.
