As one descends into this archipelago, the senses are enveloped by a quiet majesty: the ocean, impossibly clear; the sands, soft as silk; the air, perfumed with salt and sun. Each island is a sanctuary, a private Eden where nature and elegance entwine. Beneath the surface, vibrant reefs pulse with life, while above, palms sway in rhythm with the breeze. For newlyweds, it offers a beginning steeped in beauty and tranquillity.
Among these exquisite islands stands One&Only Reethi Rah, a resort that transcends luxury to become something altogether more profound. Upon arrival, the resort reveals itself with quiet grandeur. Larger than most Maldivian isles, Reethi Rah possesses a rare sense of space and scale, yet never loses its intimacy. The architecture showcases Maldivian tradition reimagined through a lens of refined modernity. Villas are nestled discreetly among tropical foliage on the beach, or poised above the lagoon, each a private haven, designed to honour both privacy and place. Our overwater villa was a sanctuary with vaulted ceilings, rich timber accents and a colour palette inspired by nature. The bath, positioned to overlook the endless horizon, became a place of quiet contemplation. Outside, a private deck descended into the lagoon, inviting morning swims and moonlit reflections. Every element was considered, every detail imbued with a sense of calm and purpose.
We blissfully explored the island on bicycles, gliding along shaded trails and sunlit stretches of sand, pausing to admire the changing hues of the sea and the gentle rustle of palm fronds overhead. One morning, we rose before dawn and made our way to the yoga pavilion, a wooden structure, open to the elements and perched above the water. There, we experienced a guided meditation that felt almost sacred. The instructor’s voice was soft and grounding, and the air was still and fragrant. It was a moment of profound connection I’ll remember forever.
Within this haven lies the One&Only Spa, an oasis of wellness that elevates the senses and restores the spirit. Set amidst verdant gardens and water features, the spa offers rituals that transcend the physical. A couples’ treatment, beginning with a ceremonial cleansing and culminating in a synchronised massage, left us suspended in a state of quiet bliss. The therapists, intuitive and gentle, seemed to understand not only the body, but the soul too.
One afternoon, we set out on a boat trip across the open water. As we drifted further from shore, a pod of dolphins appeared, leaping and frolicking in the waves beside us.
It came as no surprise that culinary artistry is a highlight at Reethi Rah. Each restaurant is a world unto itself, offering not merely meals, but experiences. At Tapasake, Japanese-Mediterranean fusion is served above waters where manta rays glide silently below. Fanditha, with its bohemian spirit and Middle Eastern flavours, invites guests to dine barefoot beneath the stars, while Reethi Restaurant, with its elegant European and Pan-Asian offerings, evokes the grandeur of a tropical château.
Perched on the northernmost edge of the island, Reethi Ah-Li offers something altogether more transcendent: an elevated and secluded venue where intimate sunset dining gives way to enchanting stargazing. Overlooking the vastness of the Indian Ocean, each course is accompanied by the quiet poetry of the horizon. And for those seeking a truly rarefied experience, the resort’s timber treehouse offers a dinner unlike any other. Wrapped in the treetops and serenaded by the sounds of the forest, one is transported into the canopy for a seven-course culinary journey. It is a sanctuary where each dish is prepared with precision and served with reverence. Yet it was a private dinner on the beach that remains etched in memory. A table was set for two, surrounded by lanterns and the sound of the sea. The chef, having learned our preferences, crafted a menu that was truly out of this world.
Beyond the indulgence, Reethi Rah offers opportunities for creativity and quiet exploration. One day, we joined a pottery-making class led by a local artisan. In a sun-dappled studio, surrounded by clay and colour, we shaped vessels with our hands, learning the language of form and texture. It was a gentle, grounding experience.
What elevates Reethi Rah beyond its physical splendour is its spirit. The staff, gracious and perceptive, seemed to anticipate every need with quiet precision. There was no intrusion, only presence. From the personalised welcome to the thoughtful gestures that appeared throughout our stay, we felt not like guests, but like cherished friends. Our only regret? Not staying longer.
