10 Questions With: Seema Gujral

The distinguished designer sits down with Dream Weddings to discuss the enduring allure of Indian couture, the inspiration behind her latest bridal collection and the art of creating heirlooms for a new generation of brides

Raised in the vibrant rhythm of Mumbai and shaped by the grandeur of Delhi, Seema Gujral has built one of India’s most celebrated couture houses on the delicate balance between modernity and tradition. Since founding her eponymous label in 1994, the designer has become synonymous with intricately crafted occasion wear that honours India’s artisanal heritage while speaking effortlessly to the contemporary bride.

What began as curiosity soon evolved into a lifelong devotion to craftsmanship. From a young age, Gujral instinctively understood the desires of her generation, creating pieces that felt current yet deeply rooted in the artistry of Indian couture. Over three decades later, that same creative instinct continues to shape a brand renowned for its meticulous embroidery, sophisticated palettes and enduring sense of glamour.

At the heart of every Seema Gujral creation lies a belief that couture should be both personal and timeless. Each garment is designed not merely for a celebration but as part of a family’s legacy, destined to become woven into memories that endure long after the wedding day. This philosophy finds its latest expression in The Promise, a bridal collection inspired by the romance, symbolism and emotional significance of Indian weddings. Rich with zardosi, zari and crystal embellishment and rendered in luminous shades of ivory, champagne gold and soft sage, the collection captures the essence of modern bridal dressing: regal, romantic and unmistakably personal.

How did the character and contrasts of your hometown and heritage shape your creative imagination? I was raised in Mumbai, a city that gave me an appreciation for energy, diversity and the beauty of constant movement. Growing up there exposed me to people, cultures and influences from every part of the country, which naturally broadened my perspective from an early age. At 19, I moved to Delhi, and that was where my professional journey truly began. Delhi introduced me to a very different aesthetic – one rooted in grandeur, heritage, craftsmanship and the richness of Indian celebrations. It was here that I built Seema Gujral and immersed myself in the extraordinary artistry of Indian couture. Looking back, I think the balance between these two cities has shaped the brand in many ways. Mumbai gave me a contemporary outlook and an openness to new ideas, while Delhi instilled a deep respect for tradition, intricate craftsmanship and the emotional significance of occasion dressing. That dialogue between modernity and heritage continues to define everything we create. For me, couture has always been about honouring Indian artistry while presenting it in a way that feels relevant to the woman of today. That philosophy is a reflection of my own journey between these two worlds.

Was there a defining moment when you knew creativity was your calling? What drew you so irresistibly to the art of fashion design – and ultimately inspired you to establish your own brand? It wasn’t a lifelong plan to become a designer. In the beginning, it was simply about exploring an opportunity and testing the waters. I was young, curious, and, in many ways, the customer myself. I understood what women like me were looking for – pieces that felt contemporary yet deeply rooted in Indian craftsmanship. As I spent more time in the process, I found myself becoming increasingly fascinated by every aspect of it. I loved experimenting with colours, silhouettes and embroidery, learning how small details could completely transform a garment. The more I understood the craft, the more I realised this was where I belonged. That journey naturally led to Seema Gujral. I wanted to create occasion wear that felt relatable to the modern woman while celebrating the artistry of Indian couture. Even today, that same curiosity and willingness to evolve continues to shape every collection we create.

What does Seema Gujral stand for, and what is its core mission? Seema Gujral is a modern Indian couture house built on the belief that craftsmanship and contemporary design can coexist beautifully. Every piece we create celebrates India’s rich artisanal traditions while embracing silhouettes that feel effortless, elegant and relevant for today’s bride. Our mission has always been to create timeless couture that feels deeply personal. Every garment is handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail and customised to reflect the personality and vision of the individual wearing it. Aesthetically, the brand is known for intricate embroidery, sophisticated colour palettes and modern glamour. We aim to create pieces that become part of a family’s memories and can be cherished for generations.

What kind of fashion designer would you describe yourself as? One guided by creativity, technique or emotion? How do these facets interplay in your creative process? I see myself as a creative-led designer. My process isn’t driven by formulas; it’s driven by curiosity. I enjoy experimenting with colour, texture, embroidery and silhouette, often without knowing exactly where the journey will lead. Some of the most exciting ideas come from allowing yourself to explore and being pleasantly surprised by the outcome. As the collection evolves, both the technical and emotional aspects reveal themselves. Through experimentation, you discover which techniques best express an idea, and equally, what emotion the piece evokes. Sometimes an embroidery technique creates a sense of grandeur; other times it’s a colour combination or silhouette that completely changes the feeling of a garment. For me, creativity is about that constant dialogue between instinct and craftsmanship. One inspires the other, and together they shape a collection that feels both technically refined and emotionally resonant.

Could you share the creative vision and inspiration behind the latest bridal collection, The Promise: The Promise is a celebration of the emotions, traditions and symbolism that lie at the heart of a wedding. I have always believed that bridal couture becomes a part of a family’s history, carrying memories and stories that last for generations. As a summer collection, I wanted to explore the beauty of ceremonial dressing through a lens that feels both timeless and fresh, creating pieces that capture the romance of the season while remaining deeply rooted in Indian couture. The collection draws inspiration from the grandeur of royal Indian celebrations, reimagined through a contemporary lens. I envisioned a world that feels cinematic and timeless, where every silhouette tells a story. From intricate zardosi, zari, and dori embroidery to pearls, crystals, and delicate detailing, each piece was created to capture the quiet drama and beauty of a once-in-a-lifetime moment. The palette of ivory, champagne gold, rose gold, powder peach, sage green, and soft neutrals reflects the elegance and luminosity of a summer wedding, creating a collection that feels regal, romantic, and contemporary.

Which piece from The Promise collection holds a special place in your heart, and what makes it your favourite? One of my favourite pieces from The Promise is a light gold bridal lehenga with crystal and zardosi embroidery. It embodies everything I love about contemporary Indian couture – timeless at its core, yet open to unexpected expression. What makes this piece especially meaningful is the optional sea green embroidered dupatta. While the light gold ensemble is classic and enduring on its own, the contrast dupatta introduces a fresh, youthful perspective. It’s an unexpected use of colour that feels modern without taking away from the garment’s traditional essence. That balance between heritage and individuality is something I always strive for in my collections. To me, it perfectly reflects today’s bride. She appreciates tradition, but she also wants to express her own personality. Sometimes, a single styling element can completely transform a look while still preserving its timeless elegance.

What guidance would you offer brides as they begin exploring design options for the first time? The biggest piece of advice I would give is to start with yourself, not with trends or expectations. Your wedding outfit should feel like an extension of who you are, not who everyone else expects you to be. Take the time to understand what you’re naturally drawn to – whether it’s colour, embroidery, silhouette or styling. The most memorable bridal looks are the ones that feel authentic to the woman wearing them. I also encourage brides to think beyond the wedding day. A couture garment becomes part of your family’s memories and, often, an heirloom. When you choose something with longevity, exceptional craftsmanship, and a design that truly resonates with you, it will hold its value – both emotionally and aesthetically – for years to come.

What guidance would you offer grooms as they begin exploring design options for the first time? My advice to grooms is to approach their wedding wardrobe with the same thought and intention as the bride. It’s one of the most significant occasions of your life, and your attire should reflect your personality rather than simply meeting tradition or expectation. Start by understanding what feels authentic to you – whether that’s classic elegance, understated luxury or something more expressive. The right outfit should feel like a natural extension of who you are, while still honouring the occasion. Finally, invest in quality and craftsmanship. A beautifully tailored sherwani or bandhgala, created with exceptional attention to detail, will never go out of style. True luxury lies in the fit, the finish and the confidence that comes from wearing something made especially for you.

Looking back on your journey so far, what would you consider your most defining career moment – the highlight that has shaped your path or marked a turning point? Opening our flagship store at The Dhan Mill in New Delhi has been one of the most defining milestones of my journey. It marked the moment when Seema Gujral evolved from being a fashion label into a complete brand experience. From the very beginning, I wanted the space to be more than a store. I wanted it to feel like an immersive destination – one that reflected the same sense of grandeur, craftsmanship and emotion as our couture. Every architectural detail, every material and every room was designed to tell our story and create an environment where clients could truly experience the world of Seema Gujral. What has made it especially meaningful is the relationships it has helped us build. Bridal couture is deeply personal, and the flagship allows us to spend time with our clients, understand their stories and guide them through one of the most important purchases of their lives. Those conversations, fittings and shared moments have transformed the space into so much more than a retail store – it has become the heart of our brand and a place where lasting relationships begin.

As your brand continues to evolve, what’s next on the horizon? Where do you envision taking the label in the coming years – creatively, strategically or globally? We’re entering a very exciting chapter for the brand. Creatively, I want to continue pushing the boundaries of Indian couture – exploring new techniques, silhouettes and artisanal craftsmanship while remaining rooted in the heritage and artistry that define Seema Gujral. Strategically, our vision is to strengthen our global presence and bring the Seema Gujral experience closer to clients around the world through thoughtfully curated retail destinations and elevated digital experiences. An important milestone in this journey is the opening of our first store in Dubai, which will allow us to build a deeper connection with our clients in the Middle East and offer them an immersive experience of the brand. Looking ahead, my ambition is for Seema Gujral to continue representing the finest of Indian craftsmanship on the global stage – creating couture that is timeless, deeply personal and designed to become part of life’s most cherished moments.
