Maison Yeya

Around The World With: Yasmine Yeya

The French-Egyptian creative director of Maison Yeya shares her favourite spellbinding destinations

Growing up, I lived in the serene city of Ismailia by the Suez Canal. My mother often took us on weekend shopping trips to Port Said, a historic and charming city on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. Known as a bustling port city, Port Said was a treasure trove of exquisite fabrics imported from around the world. It was there, wandering through markets filled with beautiful textiles, that I first discovered my passion for fabrics and the art of design. Built by the French, Port Said also has beautiful architecture and is renowned for the best seafood Egypt has to offer. Visiting always filled my senses with art, beauty and gastronomic pleasure.

These days, my most cherished place to visit is my house on Egypt’s North Coast. I go alone, with my children or I invite my closest friends to spend some quality time. Beautiful sunsets, sleeping to the magical sound of the waves and connecting with the raw beauty of nature fill me with creative energy.

Other countries that inspire me the most are, without a doubt, France and Italy. I frequently visit Paris and Lake Como to select the latest fabrics for my work. The savoir-faire and refined French and Italian tastes and know-how always inspire me to want to return to my atelier to create. The Lady Chiara of Oscuro collection was inspired by one of those trips. I would spend long hours driving through the Italian landscapes, observing the light as it changed, and visiting museums where I studied the painting style of Chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro is an Italian term which means light-dark. Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio were famous for that style. I made the analogy in my collection to the effect of spiritual light and darkness in shaping me as a person.

Tuscany is also a favourite place to visit. Its stunning views, beautiful architecture, great food and the cheerful soul of the Italians make it the dreamiest wedding destination.

When it comes to hotels, I love Bulgari Resort Dubai. I adore everything about it. The minimalist Mediterranean architecture, the modern, luxurious interiors, its exquisite spa and indoor pool with a view of the sea. Whether I visit for coffee by the marina or lunch in the yacht club, I always feel surrounded by elegance, beauty and friendly staff.

Dubai is my beloved home, and a successful day is one in which I stick to a routine. I like to wake up early, around five o’clock, for prayer and spiritual rituals, and then exercise – either at the gym, doing Pilates, cycling or swimming in the sea. Then I’m ready to start the day and head to my atelier. After work, I like to shop for fresh groceries. I love picking the catch of the day from the market. I love family dinners with my children and my sister and her family often join us. By eight o’clock, I like to relax in my home library with a good book. I’m usually asleep around 10.

Every weekend, I like to try a new restaurant with my children. We share a love of culinary experiences. We rate the restaurants and reward ourselves for the hard work of the week with a dessert.

On my travels, one of my most memorable meals was at Bukhara restaurant in New Delhi. The butter chicken was delicious.

My vacation wardrobe staples always include silk dresses and kaftans. They are effortlessly chic, comfortable and utterly feminine. A high-heeled mule for the evening can elevate any outfit. I also always pack jeans, a black tank top, an evening clutch and a crossbody bag for walking. Workout clothes and a couple of hats are also a must. When I fly long-haul, I always carry a rich moisturiser as my skin gets really dry on flights. I also pack a hydrating lip product and travel-size perfume.

Next on my bucket list is Japan. I can’t wait to explore its rich art and culture – and of course, its culinary art. I think Japan will give me an enormous amount of inspiration for my next collection.

My mantra when it comes to travelling is…plan little and allow the trip to guide your itinerary as you go. This always leads to the most beautiful and unexpected experiences.
